Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-Term Care Insurance provides financial assistance for in-home or facility expenses for assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL's): eating, bathing, dressing, toileting and transferring (i.e. getting out of a chair or bed.) In general, you are believed to need "Long-Term Care" if you can't do two or more ADLs or if you have a cognitive impairment. In some situations, this care may only last a short time and others it may be indefinite.
As life expectancy increases, so does the potential need for Long-Term Care Insurance. Chances are that if you or a family member are unable to perform two or more ADLs, you will need Long-Term Care. Without Long Term-Care Insurance, a spouse or loved one will need to either fill in as the full-time caregiver or pay for one out of pocket. Many families find themselves spending their retirement savings or inheritance in order to provide their loved one with the care they need as most of these expenses are not covered by Medicare, Medicare Supplements or private health insurance. (Medicare and many private health insurance pay only for skilled care- medical, nursing, or rehabilitative services, and ADL's are considered custodial care.) Others are forced to spend down their assets to qualify for Medicaid, which does pay for nursing home and in-home care for low income families that qualify.
